When my teenage son decided to redecorate his bedroom, he expressed his desire to incorporate his identity as an Asian-American. We brainstormed and landed on the idea of a collage of Asians who have appeared on the covers of major magazines in recent years.
This is a big deal. Growing up, I never saw faces like mine on magazine covers. I am certain Asian heroes and heroines existed; the media simply chose to ignore them.
While we still have a long way to go, I think being able to help my son create a collage of Asian heroes is a pretty cool milestone that is worth celebrating.
