Highlights
The passenger next to me teared up and bear-hugged me. When you return, I'll send my car and driver to get you.
He looked me in the eye and said; I feel closer to you than any other person. I don't know what it is about you.
I wish the flight were longer, you are so interesting!
We talked the entire flight, from takeoff to landing.
We discussed his life, family, work, business, hopes, dreams, goals, and fears.
The only thing this man knew about me was my name.
He talked with passion about so many subjects and lost himself in conversation.
After three hours, would you think he'd know much about me, too?
Nope.
He was too engaged in his favorite subject, himself.
Most people try to be interesting.
Don't.
Instead, be interested.
Ask them questions.
Be interested in them and ask:
→ How they feel. → What they are doing. → Where they are going. → Their hopes, dreams, goals. → About their fears and challenges.
Don't fake it.
Be real. Ask real questions. Give real, honest feedback.
In this conversation, I had no agenda. I passed the time on a long flight by being friendly with the person in the seat next to me.
He was aching for someone to listen to, hear, and care about him without an agenda.
When I meet people, I have no agenda - other than to leave each person or place better off.
It probably makes no sense for people in the hustle and grind.
We all know when people are after something. It's rare to meet people who give with no expectation.
But it's the magic formula for happiness, contribution, and being wanted everywhere.
Adding value is so easy. It's free. It's rare and leads to the most valuable currency: social status.
As we parted ways, my new friend told me, "I can't wait to meet you again and hear more about you."
I have never forgotten my friend from Silicon Valley. And I am sure he has never forgotten that interesting Mr. Harrison he sat next to that day.
Be interested, not interesting.
How about you?
