Intriguing article about lululemon's recent ‘Dupe Swap’ campaign that highlights the power of brand and the benefits of understanding your consumer on a deeper level.

“[T]he key to a brand becoming or maintaining cultural relevance [is] in transcending the value propositions of the products they bring to the world and finding ways to connect with people based on who they are... Marketers have to get beyond the conventional wisdoms of marketing that it’s all about the product and product-consumer fit... if we want to get to a cultural level, it’s about conviction and conviction fit.”

  • Dr. Marcus Collins (Chief Strategy Officer, Weiden + Kennedy)

Should brands encourage interaction with consumers on a deeper level as Jeff Beer suggests in his article? It seems, according to Dr. Collins, that it is necessary in order to interact with customers on a cultural level and achieve the 'conviction fit' he speaks of. What are the risks that come with meeting your consumer closer to where they are?

Golf is cool.

As avid golfers, Eastside Golf founder Olajuwon Ajanaku and I have always known this to be true. For many, though, the two words don't belong in the same sentence.

Lifestyle golf brand Eastside Golf has set out to change that, with their mission to make "golf more attractive to the younger generation, while making golf a more influential sport." It's a lofty goal, but the brand has aimed at the right targets thus far and hit them with precision. Evidence can be found in their recent collaboration with Nike's Jordan Brand, which was executed thoughtfully, generated buzz in the pro sports world, and spoke to the ethos of the growing Eastside Golf brand.

Eastside Golf's burgeoning success speaks to a new era of golf consumer: one who is younger, diverse, bucks tradition, enjoys streetwear, untucks their shirt, and... [polite gasp] might not even play golf! Their success is also proof that if you build a company with a distinct mission, great branding, thoughtful marketing, and fully-invested founders, you can stripe it pretty far down the fairway.

If you know Nike's Jordan Brand, you know that collaborations with custom sneaker colorways, co-branded storytelling, and custom apparel are tough to come by. This stamp of approval from the Jordan Brand is impressive, and proof that Eastside Golf is invested in its mission to reach a new demographic of young people: both golfers and non-golfers alike.
