When I was a senior in high school, serving as editor-in-chief of The Landon News, I covered a lecture on campus by the legendary TIME White House correspondent Hugh Sidey. When the story published, I mailed a copy to Mr. Sidey, and that began a years-long pen pal relationship.

Typically our exchanges involved my asking for a job and Mr. Sidey typing (on a typewriter) a beautifully crafted response ending with a rejection, and encourging me to set my entry-level ambitions a little lower than TIME.

I still have one of his letters framed in my office, dated Jan 7, 1992. Sidey wrote, "Pray that the economy gets better. Jobs in the trade have literally shrunk. Wonderful people have been forced out, newcomers discouraged. I've never seen it like this. But always in such times of upheavel unexpected opportunities arise. And the daring practicioners, the sharp ones, the journalists who live it and breathe it are always in demand."

I reflect on those words often when I consider the current state of the news industry. Virtually every day there is another story mentioning "secular decline," "news deserts," and "extinction events." The pain has been equally spread among newspapers, magazines, broadcast and cable networks and even innovative digital natives. But all is not lost. The fact is, there are bright spots everywhere, at news organizations big and small.

We've launched an ambitious growth strategy at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution rooted in a belief that we can transform a storied daily newspaper into a modern media company. Our mission is to be the most essential and engaging source of news for the people of Atlanta, Georgia and The South. We're building an exceptionally talented team of journalists, product leaders, developers, designers and marketers who are focused on producing world class journalism and product experiences. We're doing this to meet a critical customer need at a critical time. We're doing it because it's the right thing to do.

Everyone at The AJC is clear-eyed about the challenges we're facing and the difficult road that lies ahead. But we have a special team, a clear mission and the support of company that believes deeply in the importance of local news. I'll take that hand any day.

NPR media reporter Dave Folkenflik spent some time in our newsroom and our city and captured our story in a recent report. I hope you'll give it a listen. And ... if you like what you hear, I hope you'll subscribe.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's mission is to be the most essential and engaging source of news for the people of Atlanta, of Georgia and the South. This isn't just a slogan we paste on Keynote presentations; it's a reminder of why we exist and who we serve.

We traveled to Macon yesterday, one of three cities across Georgia where The AJC has opened new bureaus. The trip provided an opportunity to sit down with community leaders, politicians and local residents to better understand what's on their mind, what makes Macon tick, and how The AJC can be most relevant in people's lives.

We are grateful to have had the chance to meet with Jessica Walden from the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce, Karla Redding-Andrews, the force of nature behind the Otis Redding Foundation (and daughter of one of my musical heroes), and Macon-Bibb Mayor Lester Miller and Mayor Pro Temp Seth Clark. We were also fortunate to spend time with Josh Rogers, the President and CEO of NewTown Macon, Georgia Supreme Court Justice Verda Colvin, and Sherrie Marshall, the former Executive Editor of the Macon Telegraph. We walked away from our day in middle Georgia with new friends and big ideas.

Last night, we produced the latest installment in our Politically Georgia LIVE On the Road series at Macon's famed Capitol Theater, with special guest Chancellor (and former Governor) Sonny Perdue, as well as the Mayor and Mayor Pro Temp. You can listen here: https://lnkd.in/e-A3rZFb or anywhere you get your podcasts. The highlight of the evening was listening to the questions from our audience of Maconites and having the chance to meet with members of the community after the show.

Visiting cities across Georgia provides us with an extraordinary opportunity to hear directly from people, to listen to their concerns, and to take that feedback home as we evolve The AJC and build products to meet their needs. It is the most exciting part of my job.

Rarely a day goes by when we don't read another story about the looming threat of AI and the dystopian future in store for the news business. This week's panic was sparked by Google's plan to infuse its search tool with its generative AI model, Gemini, which will, as Google put it "let Google do the Googling for you." This led to another flurry of gloomy headlines about "cataclysmic" declines in search traffic. There is an alternative -- instead of panicking, newsrooms can focus on building essential and engaging brands and finding ways to connect directly with customers. The biggest advantage we have is our relevance to the communities we serve across Atlanta, Georgia and the South. We need to take responsibility for our product and our business and do the hard work to develop and maintain direct relationships with customers. The AJC did that for decades before the advent of the internet, and will continue doing it no matter what role AI has in our future. AI can’t do what we did yesterday in Macon. #gapol
