Dealers should reflect on the impact of CDK's cyber attack today. They have closed all systems as a precaution. I feel like a broken record, but automotive is extremely exposed and it appears to fall on deaf ears. There are so few businesses with formal processes, comprehensive risk assessments, no regular testing of security systems, and no security information event management. What I have seen is often weak, staff around the business don't know anything about it, and would likely fail a targeted vulnerability assessment. So why bother - operational disruption, extortion, and fines to name a few, and that's assuming you can stay in business afterwards of course. I love the auto industry, but I wish it took this seriously at all levels. It's so much more expensive after the event, and you'll know if you are taking it seriously, because you will be spending serious amounts of money on it! DM me if you want help and intros to Automotive Cyber Security specialists. It might be the most important message you have ever sent.
