Next year, the oldest members of the baby boomer generation will turn 80. It’s a cause for celebration, but it’s also a milestone our nation is completely unprepared to meet.

In a new article for Fierce Healthcare Healthcare, I outline what a modern approach to caring for this rapidly aging population could look like, with inspiration from abroad. It involves integrating healthcare, social services, and community resources to support not only older adults, but their caregivers, too.

For one, we need to evolve how we address unmet social needs on a systemic level. We’ve historically tried to do this through our healthcare system—which was never designed to address social needs in the first place. We need to encourage and support light-touch, community-level care so that we’re not just referring people to services and support, we’re taking the time to find out what it will take to actually get them there, then delivering it.

Countries with better social and health outcomes continue to innovate with a sense of urgency. Where’s ours?

Papa is truly becoming a new kind of care provider. Our nationally available, trusted Papa Pals step in where doctors, nurses, health plans, and even families sometimes can’t to address their health related social needs.

Thousands of times everyday in cities across the country, Papa Pals fill gaps to meet member needs, like…

  • Taking Julie to her first primary care visit in 20 years
  • Driving Lacey to the food bank and advocating for her and her family there
  • Providing comfort and companionship to Donny, a blind member who says his Papa Pals bring light into his life
  • Bringing weekly respite to Dale, who at 82, is his wife’s primary caregiver and never leaves her side

We’re working with our partners more closely than ever to further leverage our national network of compassionate carers we’ve built to help members and their families get the care they need.

I spoke about this, and the continued integration of social health into traditional care, in a recent episode of the Healthcare Rethink podcast. Take a listen here: https://lnkd.in/efPPbcNP
