And so the Big Day has finally arrived.
Graham Greene once wrote that there is always a point in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in. As is the nature of grouchy old British authors of a certain era, his wasn’t always an entirely positive outlook on life. I, however, take a different view. As I attend my eldest daughter’s induction ceremony at Bates College today, I am so proud of the young woman that she has become, and am excited for the opportunities that the future holds for her. Strong-willed yet empathetic; confident yet humble; and hilariously funny, not to mention blessed with tremendous taste in music. As Caitlin embarks onto this next phase of her life, I take enormous pride in who she is and thank the many people who have played a role in her personal development, some of whom are also in a similar celebratory (with a touch of melancholy) mood right now.
Being a parent is a little like being a cook, not to be confused with a baker. Baking is like chemistry – one wrong ingredient or measure, and the final product is ruined. Cooking, on the other hand, is in no small part down to experimentation, time, adaption on-the-fly, and – let’s be honest – luck. So it is with raising children. We all hope that our kids will turn out to be the best version of themselves, but nothing is ever guaranteed. We can provide them with the grounding and supportive environment to succeed, but at the end of the day it’s mostly down to their own hard work and resolve that determines who they are, and lays the foundation for who they will become.
Robert F. Kennedy graduated from Bates in 1945, and later said that “every generation inherits a world it never made; and, as it does so, it automatically becomes the trustee of that world for those who come after. In due course, each generation makes its own accounting to its children.” As I look at the young people as trustees of our future, I couldn’t feel better about our eventual audit.
