What makes a better speaker?

I’m delighted to have been asked to speak at the Empple employee branding Festival this October.

I like to use every speaking opportunity to up my game. I’m going to learn as much as I can over the next month to give my best talk. I’ll share what I find.

What’s your point?

The book ‘TED talks - the official TED guide to public speaking’ says many people fall in love with their idea for a talk - they find it hard to imagine what is complicated about it.

But too many talks leave the audience with nothing to hold on to. There’s no clear point.

1️⃣ The key is to present just one idea - as thoroughly and completely as you can in the limited time. TED talks calls it the ‘throughline’ 2️⃣ Don’t make it too predictable - there needs to be something unexpected about it

I’m building my talk on one of my most successful Linkedin posts this year - titled: “Don’t try to motivate your employees to share on social media.”

My area of expertise is employee advocacy but within that I will be focussing on how to close the motivation gap and support employees to grow a professional sharing habit to grow your employee brand.

Follow me as I discover more about successful speaking.

Those who can… should teach?

Steven Bartlett (The Diary of a CEO) says one of the best ways to grow your knowledge is to teach.

In all of the things he’s done to advance his knowledge and skills he said teaching is the thing that has made the most difference.

What he means by teaching in this context is publishing your ideas publicly and consistently. The very act of being able to simplify an idea and share it clearly is the route to better understanding it.

This is why I’m such a big believer in the value of building your personal brand on Linkedin as an employee. Of becoming an employee advocate.

If done well, you are actively and consistently working to help your audience - and growing your knowledge every time.

Everyone should be doing it.
