Obsessed! Love love love! Here’s a story about how I stopped saying I love products.

My phone replaced my watch around 2012. Having time in my pocket felt right. Over those watchless years, just as calls became the worst app on phones, time became the least important part of watches.

Fast forward. I had a problem. My phone’s buzz buzz never got my attention. I missed calls, texts, meetings. No good.

A watch felt like the answer. I love technology, but I’m not made happier when an object is giving As Seen On TV slicing dicing frying flying. I just wanted one thing: buzz buzz on my wrist. Oh, and I wanted it to look like a watch.

I found my match in the Withings ScanWatch 2. It’s perfect. A classic-looking wristwatch with an adorably small cutout screen that scrolls a message… too slowly. You can speed it up by turning the crown, or you can glance at the sender and decide immediately if you care to read on. Turns out, the answer is usually no. Did I mention it’s perfect?

Loving a product means feeling kinship with the minds behind it. This watch made me realize how rare the feeling is.

Most things out there are fine. A select few deserve my love. Like people.

What’s your one thing?

I’ve been trying to figure out why there’s an uptick in smart, capable companies releasing hyped products that feel unfinished, purposeless, and generally forgettable. What gives?

A theory:

Collective decision-making is weakening because video meeting tools want us to have a good time. Hear me out.

Bias to agreement: Things were bleak in 2020, but work continued. To help raise our spirits, communication tools started adding “fun” features like floating thumbs ups and confetti. Say something agreeable, and you’re rewarded with a screen full of claps and fireworks. But, what if people don’t agree? It used to be that even if people weren’t open with their feedback, their body language of crossed arms and serious faces told the story. Reading the room is mostly gone.

The tools we use are designed to make meetings joyful through sycophancy, which isn’t the point of meetings at all. Meetings aren’t celebrations, they’re forks in the road. It’s easier than ever to agree and find yourself too far down the wrong path to turn around.

I don’t have a solution, but I feel the weight of the problem. Remote work is here to stay, so we need some new engagement modes and a rethinking of our tools to create more honesty, directness, and focus. Otherwise, we’re just allowing badness into the world.

How do we fix this?
