The US is currently in a hot race with China and Europe for global leadership in advanced fifth generation wireless networks (5G). The Chinese and European approach is to focus on success for "national champions" including Huawei and ZTE in China and Ericson and Nokia in Europe. The challenge with this approach is that once a buyer selects the equipment and imbedded software from one of these providers it can inevitably lead to a locked-in future for upgrades and further deployments. The US alternative, now supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and being addressed at the University of Utah, is to use standardized off-the-shelf hardware and a software defined 5G architecture using technologies such as ORAN (Open Radio Access Networks) and OAI (Open Air Interface). Properly developed this approach can assure more rapid, cost-effective and ubiquitous 5G deployments and ultimate US global 5G leadership. POWDER, financed by the NSF and a number of industry partners is being deployed as a unique Wide Area Network open architecture testbed to establish US and Utah global leadership in next generation wireless technologies. The following article sets forth how this platform and leadership is being implemented at the University of Utah.
