🌟 Paradise Lost, No Longer: Does Focusing on All Stakeholders Recast Friedman's Financial Formula for Success?
In 1970, Milton Friedman famously stated, “the social responsibility of business is to increase its profits.” Today, data suggests that the most profitable companies are those that deliver substantial benefits to customers, employees, suppliers, and communities. Who is saying this?
Recent research from Bain & Company confirms that companies excelling in these areas achieve superior shareholder returns.
Bain's analysis of the S&P 500 over a decade reveals a striking trend: companies that prioritise high financial performance while also delivering significant benefits to their stakeholders saw shareholder returns grow by an impressive 338%. Conversely, those with lower performance in both areas experienced a growth of just 126%.
So Friedman was right—in that the pathway to increasing profits involves a deep commitment to benefiting all stakeholders.
🔍 Here’s why:
- Comprehensive Value Creation: Companies that integrate benefits for all stakeholders into their core strategies achieve superior financial performance. - By addressing the needs and expectations of customers, employees, suppliers, and communities, businesses foster loyalty and trust, which translate into long-term profitability.
- Strategic Alignment: Aligning business operations with societal goals enhances brand reputation and competitive advantage. Companies seen as responsible and ethical attract more customers and better talent, and face fewer regulatory hurdles.
- Performance Metrics: Adopting comprehensive performance metrics that encompass financial, social, and environmental impacts ensures balanced growth. This approach facilitates better decision-making and strengthens accountability.
- Leadership and Culture: Building a corporate culture that values transparency, ethical practices, and stakeholder engagement is essential. Effective leadership that promotes these values ensures they become embedded in the organisation’s DNA, driving sustainable success.
- Regulatory and Compliance Synergy: Integrating sustainability into core business strategies helps navigate complex regulatory environments and mitigate risks, uncovering opportunities for innovation and growth.
