Highlights
My mother has fled Ukraine and is now in the Czech Republic looking for a job. She has a degree in Chemical Engineering/Chemistry specialising in polymers (in particular, natural and synthetic fibres and rubbers). Previously worked in the analytical chemistry lab and has been working as a highly successful sales manager for two decades. She speaks English, Russian and Ukrainian. Please message me if you have any offers or know anyone in the Czech Republic/Europe who might. Thank you!
Excited to share my first co-first-author paper as a postdoc at Imperial College London and The Francis Crick Institute!

We describe a new approach to target MYC deregulation in cancer through synthetic lethality with NMT inhibition (NMTi). Our novel orally bioavailable NMT inhibitor IMP1320 eliminates high-MYC tumours in 6 days!
We discovered that NMTi causes mitochondrial complex I defects in high-MYC cancer cells followed by mitochondrial dysfunction. Mechanistically, NMTi-induced mitochondrial failure is concurrent with loss of myristoylation on respiratory complex I assembly factor NDUFAF4 with its subsequent proteasomal degradation. Fortuitously, we discover that a patient mutation in NDUFAF4, associated with a neurological disorder called the Leigh syndrome, also leads to loss of myristoylation on NDUFAF4, its degradation and therefore lack of respiratory complex I, further supporting the proposed mechanism.
MYC oncogene is deregulated in >50% of cancers but is notoriously difficult to target directly. Our report opens up a new avenue for selective targeting of MYC-deregulated cancers.
Fantastic multi-disciplinary and multi-collaborative team effort!
