Today, I got a Slack notification about a deal closing that, 6 months ago, would have been one of our biggest deals ever.
The weird part was that I had never heard of the customer and didn't even know it was in the pipeline.
Turns out, Kelsey Skibinski had taken it from lead all the way through to close.
Kelsey joined less than three weeks ago...
Conventional wisdom would tell you it takes three months for a new AE to ramp, one month if you're really lucky.
I knew she was going to ramp fast, but not that fast!
Oh, and that was also her 3rd deal of the week.
And, best of all, I learn something every time I hear her sell.
Just another example of someone joining Superfiliate and immediately being better than me.
That's happening a lot these days, and I'm not mad about it!
Everyone says "hire people better than you. Hire people that know things you don't know."
Great advice, but how does one use that broad statement to actually find the right talent??
For me, a lot of it is about finding the right places to look.
Certain organizations are known to be great at certain things - sales, product management, strategy, etc.
Find the organizations that are historically strong in places you want to get better, and go find people that have been there or are there today.
Often, there is/was an exceptional leader creating that culture of excellence that impacts every single person in their orbit.
You might not be able to afford/attract/need that leader, but you can certainly find someone that saw what great looks like and was trained in it.
Even better, the high performers who were in that org but were earlier in their careers/journeys are often the hungry ones with something to accomplish or prove.
Those are the people you want!
For those people, you can present an opportunity to take the next step and recreate the magic they saw in their last role, but with their own flair.
Not only is it effective, but it's also extremely rewarding to watch people realize how much they know and feel empowered to chart their own course!
