One of the more lasting concepts that I find myself frequently coming back to was introduced by Simone Stolzoff in his recent book "The Good Enough Job." He argues that identity-diversification, or the ability to embrace the many versions of oneself, is among the most important efforts a person can make to develop emotional resiliency.

Americans, in particular, establish deep identity ties to their profession, which are taught at a young age and subsequently reinforced throughout adolescence and into adulthood. It's why so many of us ask "So what do you do?" in social settings. Companies, titles, and salary have become the predominant factors when we consider our sense of self and the value we bring to the world. Leaders (and especially Founders) are particularly vulnerable to singular identities since they devote so much of their time and energy into their companies. So much so that they often become synonymous with them.

So what happens when something intense happens like a round of layoffs or a startup shutting down? These things happen every day. In many cases, the question of "Who am I?" becomes surprisingly difficult to answer. If you are not the _____ at ______, then who are you? Financial situations aside, the emotional fallout can be damaging when you're forced to abandon this construct and meet a new reality. Identity-diversification allows you to mitigate the crisis by encouraging you to acknowledge and pursue all of the different versions of yourself that make you, you. You likely embody many roles, across a spectrum of people and communities, providing a distinct form of value to each. Recognizing this, and treating your many identities with equal enthusiasm, is key to building resiliency when one of these identities is lost.
