IT'S OUT.
More than 2 years ago, I had a coffee with Walter de Oude. He was about to leave SingLife, the amazing company he had built from the ground up.
Being a restless character, Walt wanted to start something new - another fintech company. We talked about potential names, one of which was GrowNuts.
'Interesting,' I said. 'At least it stands out. But we should think of some more options.'
We talked about the kind of brand names that stick in peoples' heads and which eventually go on to become iconic brands. First and foremost, they do not try and describe the category. They usually come out of left field. The name 'Apple' was chosen by Steve Jobs because everyone knows what one is and they generally like eating them.
The 'Starbucks' name was taken from the book Moby Dick. It's the name of the first mate on The Pequod.
A week later, I met up with Walt again. 'I've got the name,' he said. 'We're going to call it Chocolate.'
'I like it,' I replied. 'How did you come up with that one?'
'Well, chocolate makes you happy. And Chocolate Finance makes your money happy.'
'It's great,' I said. 'Really great.'
More than 2 years later, the brand has finally launched. We have been involved in the brand end to end. We created the logo and brand identity (see below). We also created the advertising campaign. It's big and bold. Something that wouldn't have been possible without our amazing clients Anushka Yadav and Evonne Ong.
The work is going to stand out like a sore thumb. A beautiful sore thumb.
Thank you to my team. Shen Au and Abigail Low. The ones that pulled it all together with beautiful design and art direction.
And thank you Gerard Lim, for keeping his hand on the rudder and steering us in the right direction.
I will show more of the work over the coming weeks.
ONCE WERE PIRATES.
I met up with my old creative partner, Joel Clement, in Bangkok this week.
We had a great time. It was good to be back in the old hood where we had a good natter about the golden days at Saatchi. As he pointed out, we were the pirates. We won all the awards, won a ton of business, made lots of money and had the best fun you could ever imagine.
Thinking back to that period, we worked in an organisation that had an incredibly strong culture. Our motto was 'Nothing is impossible'. And even though sometimes we didn't always live up to that rallying cry (P&G was as conservative as it could get), most of the time we went beyond the boundaries.
No one frowned at that. It was applauded. Expected. It was a nod to the legacy built by Charles and Maurice.
Chokh Di, Joel. See you again soon.
