5 things marathon training for the Sydney Marathon is teaching me about building & growing The WOD Life...

  1. It takes time

You can't just go out and run 42+ kms on day one of training. Like growing a business, it takes time. Time to build up capabilities, a careful training plan (strategy) with consistent efforts (execution).

  1. You will have setbacks

Injuries, sickness and travel. Nothing ever perfectly goes to plan. There will be roadblocks. This is all part of the journey. Learn to embrace it, work around it and keep going.

  1. As you run further, you need more calories.

Think your business gets easier as you grow? Sure, it might. But in real life, you need more inputs (calories) the larger you grow (the further you run). Calories in business are like systems, people, processes, cash and inventory. You need all of these run run further and grow.

  1. You are capable of more than you think

At the starting line of training for a marathon you might not be able to string together 5kms. 42kms looks and feels daunting. But if you break it down into small pieces, build over time, it's crazy to think what may have once felt unreachable starts to get a little closer.

  1. Learn to love the journey

Sure the end goal of business success (revenue, profitability, sale or dividends) is what you are striving for, but like finishing a marathon you have to learn to love the journey. Show up daily, find enjoyment in the process, little wins and motivations to keep you pushing.
