Highlights
For those of us working in the 3PL and fulfillment industries the last couple years have been a wild ride. After a couple years of uncomfortable growth, we quickly went through a couple years of even more uncomfortable business pressure.
So where are things going next? And when?
At Extensiv's Edge Conference we shared data showing that after shedding 9%+ of warehouse jobs between May of 2022 and December of 2023, the warehouse employment market has basically been treading water since Q4 of 2023. That's a loss of over 100,000 jobs in 2 years from May 2022 to May 2024. Certainly not the growth the industry has been accostomed to (YoY growth in warehouse employment was consistently 8-12% every year from 2014 - 2019). Between 2014 - 2020 transportation and warehousing was the second best industry for job growth, behind only construction. Since 2022 it has been the worst. And warehousing has been far worse than transportation during that time.
For those of you tracking the cardboard box index (the producer price index of mass produced corrugated cardboard) as a forward looking indicator of ecommerce shipping, it has eked out very small gains since last year. A positive sign, but hardly the type of growth typical for the 3PL industry.
As Rick Watson said in his awesome keynote at our user conference, "Not great, not terrible." Upon reviewing the Bureau of Labor statistics data, one could contend that we're stepping away from terrible...but have a long way to go to get back to great.
Fortunately, at Extensiv our customers have continued to see strong double digit+ order growth year over year. And the past couple months have seen our 3PL customers adding new customers at the fastest rate in years. We're proud that our platform is about to help our customers outpace the market so dramatically.
Thanks to all you that joined us at Edge and I look forward to seeing the rest of you next April! I can't wait to see where our industry stands then.
Excited to share the SupplyTech Breakthrough has named Extensiv as the "3PL Platform of the Year". We're honored by the recognition.
