As a Los Angeles native, I’ve visited the Getty countless times with family, on school trips, and with friends—and each time is a new experience of inspiration and discovery.
Another aspect that makes it special to me is that my uncle was one of the many construction workers that helped build the 110-acre campus back in the ‘90s.
I recently visited the Getty with my parents and again I was hit with a spirit of wonder as I rode the tram up the hill and first caught a glimpse of the iconic travertine stone against the blue LA sky.
As we made our way into and out of exhibits, my architect father and I nerded out over the buildings’ architecture and use of 1.2 million square feet of stone. My mother and I walked through the dahlias in the central garden and took in the views of Los Angeles from the succulent garden.
Architect Richard Meier sought to incorporate the urban and natural elements of Los Angeles into this 110-acre center. The Getty Center sits atop a hill over the 405 freeway in the Santa Monica mountains. This iconic structure holds the vast collection of the late J. Paul Getty, a businessman and art collector, who used most of his wealth to create the famed arts institution.
A collection that caught my attention was “Porcelain from Versailles: Vases for a King and Queen.” This exhibit showcases vases on loan from Versailles and were previously owned by King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette.
