Highlights
Between career and life, the path to success and growth often requires a level of sacrifice. The choices we make reflect what we are willing to give up to achieve our evolving ambitions. In recent years, I chose a lateral move in exchange for a better work life balance, as well as walked away from a potential promotion because I chose location that mattered most.
Last month, I’ve decided to part ways with adidas after 5 years and hit pause on my career so I can redirect my energy and attention towards a new role.
I got the most important role I’ve always dreamed of and added to my scope of life work - motherhood. Being a new mom has been the greatest and hardest challenge, yet the most fulfilling work I’ve ever done. Throughout my transformation, I realized this version of myself had heightened expectations and shifted priorities, which in turn, has prompted me to re-evaluate my goals and my purpose.
While this career pause coincides with my husband’s job relocating us to the east coast, the thought crossed my mind while I was on maternity leave. My time spent learning and growing with my baby opened me up to new ways of thinking and doing; sharpening my ability to manage my time and prioritize to-do’s, gaining clarity on what’s important and purposeful.
The choice to stay or to step away from a job, title and salary is fraught with uncertainties. But ultimately, holding on to a job and financial independence sacrifices my undivided time spent raising my daughter in a new city. And that wasn’t a sacrifice I was ready to make.
Mothering aside, my hope is that this pause will reset, redirect and reignite me for something new when I am ready to go back in the workforce.
It is not lost on me that having these benefits and this choice is a privilege, especially in light of recent layoffs within the sportswear industry. I am grateful for adidas’ maternity leave benefits that allows mothers/parents to spend valuable time with their family. I am grateful for leaders and teammates who have supported me in my journey and lead with empathy and compassion (Christopher Strachan, Daniel Dramani, Hanan Olson, MBA, Timo Kaemmer on the short list).
Most of all, I am grateful for my husband, Rick Nariani, for supporting my time and space to be a mom and figure out next steps. The good news is, New York is a city full of opportunities. I’m looking forward to exploring new opportunities and re/connecting with friends and former colleagues in the east coast. Till then!
