The TN Commission on Children & Youth (TCCY) produces a yearly report that breaks down areas of child well-being by county in TN. In Davidson County, 20.4% of our population is under 18. Davidson County ranks 93rd out of 95 counties in child well-being.
I’ve been a board member of CASA Nashville appointed since 2020. CASA — which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates — gives a voice to abused and neglected children. CASA’s goal is to serve 100% of the need in Davidson County and to work to improve the outcomes listed in the 2024 TCCY report.
The report assesses our children in 4 categories: economic well-being, health, education and family & community.
Most people assume that CASA helps children find safe and permanent homes.
CASA does do that, but CASA also helps in each of these 4 categories:
Economic well-being: CASA helps identify barriers and resources for parents/guardians who are experiencing poverty and homelessness
Education and Health: CASA advocates in the areas of education and health
Family and Community: In FY23, CASA served 391 of the 586 children in state custody for child abuse, helping 145 children exit foster care. 100% of these children were still in safe placement 6 months after their case closed.
If you’re inclined to donate toward CASA’s mission of helping each child in need, please do so in the link in comments.
They say traveling gives people new perspectives. It does. But last week my perspective on travel changed without even leaving the airport.
I toured the Nashville International Airport with my Nashville EO colleagues.
Here’s a few stats that blew my mind: ✈️600 airplanes travel to and from the airport each day 💵If a plane is 65%+ the airline is making money 💼52% of airport business is Southwest (roughly 134 flights per day) 🚶The longest walk at the airport is 2,000 feet. 💰BNA does $24 million in revenue each year. That’s ¼ of the revenue of ATL’s airport (the #1 airport by revenue).
