Here is a story that caught my attention. Chick-fil-A have announced that they are moving away from completely antibiotic-free chicken, due to lack of availability. Instead they are going to start allowing the use in their supply chain of a limited range of antibiotics which are “not important for human medicine”.   Of course I’m concerned about the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture and human healthcare, and of course I’d prefer my Chick-fil-A without any antibiotics at all. So I don’t want to applaud this decision, but I’m not going to criticise it either. The market will tell them whether they got it right.   What I do say is that this is exactly the kind of big, difficult, business-impacting issue that Procurement needs to be bringing to the table.    Procurement leaders need to focus (that means to the consequential exclusion of smaller topics) on the categories that shape the business and define the brand, then identify which of them contain issues worthy of top-level deliberation. It doesn't matter whether the issue is a risk or an opportunity, only that it is important enough to be worth your, and other leaders' time.   As in this case, these won’t always be easy “feelgood” discussions, but that’s leadership. And that’s what you want…. Isn’t it?

In Melbourne as we continue to help Procurement teams to make a leap in negotiated value. I’m delighted to say that we’ve delivered in-person Procurement workshops on five continents this year, with next stop back in Asia for our first ever programme on the ground in China.

As for the sign - it’s painted on the wall opposite my hotel and I can’t help feeling it’s setting me a challenge for the week.
