Highlights
There is no other corporate activity with a lower enjoyment/criticality ratio than an interview .... read on for an interviewing hack ...
Almost every interviewer, however junior or senior tries to get out of interviewing. Infact one can notice an unmistakable sigh of relief when an interview gets cancelled. While companies and leaders try different ways to incentivise and reward interviewers, the basic problem is that the activity itself is not enjoyable and adds very little value to the interviewer.
At the same time nothing could be more unfair to the candidate who is eager to join an organization.
To this end, I am now experimenting with a small hack when it comes to interviewing. Few days before the interview I inform the candidate that he / she should spend the first 15 mins of our discussion on giving a talk on a small subject. For tech folks, it could be a library, a tool or a SDK that they used in their work before. Basically something that solves a point problem. Candidates are free to use any visual aid they want (or not).
This has been pretty successful
- It has definitely made interviews more enjoyable for me.
- It helps in better evaluation as compared to typical DSA questions (which we have completely stopped btw).
- It provides a tangible way of checking for collaboration, thoughtfulness and brainstorming on open ended / subjective topics
- Filters out candidates who are casually interviewing
- Helps the outdated part of me to become relevant again
Some talks and topics that I vividly remember from the last week
- Docosaurus
- Temporal
- CuPy / Cuda
- Deno
In hindsight, feels like I should have started this 8 years back 🙂
