Highlights
A year ago, three insights began to resonate with me:
-
Conversations with women living with metastatic breast cancer revealed that they measured life by milestones with their loved ones, especially children and grandchildren.
-
An eye-opening chat with Lauren Huffmaster highlighted the lack of resources addressing the emotional impact of metastatic (stage 4) breast cancer on families.
-
The alarming increase in younger women being diagnosed with this terminal cancer meant that more young families were affected.
This led me to think about how we could make a difference.
Inspired by my nightly routine with my toddler, Mira, the idea of creating 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 came to life.
The best children’s books are the ones that resonate with both parents and children. This book does just that. We know because it was created in collaboration with eight MBC patients and a psychiatrist who works with families affected by MBC.
"The Adventure Jar" speaks to the magic families can find, even amidst the uncertainty and disappointment of a diagnosis. It’s one of the first books of its kind.
I’m proud that Gilead is offering this resource FREE to all families living with metastatic breast cancer—available in both hard and soft copies. https://lnkd.in/gHrxwuTh
Thank you to everyone at Gilead (in particular my partners on this project Elyse Spatz Caplan, MA , Michelle Kelly, Logan Carrington ) Evoke, and especially the women who shared their stories.

The holidays tend to lend itself to a time of reflection for me. This year in particular has been very special - my daughter has grown from one to almost 2 years old and is hitting milestones every other week it seems. I've found a stride at work that works for me, and together with my colleagues, we've accomplished so much. Some themes/moments that stand out for me:
⭐ Community Impact: Being a part of the launch of a therapy that could benefit so many ⭐ Recognition of work reflected back at me: Seeing a campaign that my colleagues and I worked on shared in Endpoints (and having the privilege to be quoted!) ⭐ Birthing/incubating two "big" ideas that have gained lots of traction, and I'll be proud to deliver to the breast cancer community in 2024. IYKYK ⭐ Growing beyond the walls of my communications job with a patient advocacy project in Lisbon ⭐ Deepening connection with my colleagues - this one hits me the hardest, because I am surrounded by such brilliance and together we move mountains.
There's so much more that I'm proud of. I get to start off next year with a new Director title, but same mentality - let's do meaningful work that will impact lives...and let's please have a good time doing it 😊
Happy holidays, everyone!
