Highlights
As someone who works in trust and safety, I’m no stranger to the challenges of keeping online spaces secure. However, this work recently took on a new meaning when my son became a victim of cyberbullying on Discord. As a parent, it’s heartbreaking to see your child go through this. I’ve always made it a priority to teach my son how to be safe online, and luckily, he was able to recognize the signs of cyberbullying and bring it up to me. But even with this awareness, the experience has been stressful and upsetting for him. One of the most frustrating aspects of this situation has been the lack of an obvious way for me, as a parent, to report this abusive behaviour to Discord, since it occurred on a server that neither I nor my son are members of. This highlights a significant gap in the reporting process that leaves families feeling powerless in the face of such harmful behavior. This experience has reinforced the importance of monitoring online interactions and advocating for better tools and resources to protect our children in digital spaces. I’m sharing this to highlight that cyberbullying can affect any family, regardless of background or expertise. Let’s continue to work together to ensure our children have a safe space to explore, learn, and connect online. #Cyberbullying #TrustAndSafety #OnlineSafety #Parenting #DigitalWellness
