Almost ten years ago I wrote my Honors Thesis for Elon University comparing and contrasting the media images of Loretta Lynn and Taylor Swift during the heights of their popularity in the country music landscape. The biggest similarity between the two? They were both very in control of their image. Even back then Taylor knew who she wanted to be and who she wanted you to see her as. (She's regretted some of those decisions, and as a young female she was heavily influenced by the "machine" even when she wasn't aware of it, but she still couldn't pretend to be someone else.) She's even more in control now; taking us through her eras, accepting her cringey years, embracing her emotions, and wearing her heart on her sleeve.
