Highlights
I started my week with an inspiring TEDx talk by Hannah Kromminga. It's a great example of product storytelling that is deeply connected to founders' values. Go ahead and listen to Hannah talk about GIFTD, a new platform for the free redistribution of consumer goods that she is building.
GIFTD addresses a major pain point and a challenge in retail: redistributing consumer goods that were never or rarely used to those who need them. Around 100 billion pieces of clothing are produced worldwide every year. 30-50% of these garments are rarely or never worn, wasting $1.5 trillion in household spending and emitting as much CO2 as global air travel (about 1 gigatonne).
The numbers speak for themselves. Having worked in fashion tech for more than five years, I see overproduction as one of the critical areas of the modern retail industry.
Startup founders often ask me for PR advice. In 90% of our talks, the conversation starts with the same statement: "We need to be published in Forbes or TechCrunch."
I've seen this happen dozens of times, and my answer is always the same: Why do you think you need it?
This is where the interesting part begins. Some founders say it's because their competitors are featured in Forbes or TechCrunch. Others believe it's to impress prospective investors.
Here's my advice to every founder seeking PR guidance: NEVER start with an assumption of what you need. Start with an open question.
Before you meet with a PR consultant, share your business objectives with them and ask: "Here are our business objectives for the next six months. How can PR support those?" This is where you start to have an insightful conversation.
Following what your competitors do or fulfilling your investors' dream of being featured in TechCrunch might give you a short-term spike in app installs or website visits, but it won't help you achieve your business goals.
