Highlights
Life doesn’t come with a social media filter.
So why do so many of us women feel the need to fix our noses, inject Botox, wear fake eyelashes, and use hair extensions for longer hair? Who created this norm? The worst part is that it works because it gives you more job opportunities.
Is this the message we want to convey to young girls growing up? That they will be judged based on their looks rather than their intellect?
I’m not saying I don’t care about my looks. I can be as vain as anyone, and I still care about what people say about me, although I hate to admit it. Will that ever change? Probably not. There’s always the fear of the high school bully reappearing, screaming that I’m ugly and not enough in any way.
I was born this way. Can I change myself? Of course, anyone can if they desire it enough. So why don’t I? Perhaps it's because I genuinely like myself just as I am. I deeply believe in my right to look and be exactly as I am. That it’s every woman's right.
I want the focus to be on what I say, not how I look. I strive to become a better communicator, writer, teacher, and public speaker.
So, this is what you get. Some days, I will show up without any makeup. Other days, I wear makeup and try to look my best. But not because I have to—only because I want to.
