Today may be the biggest win of my entire career, so I'm gonna celebrate and brag a little! Four years ago, Benjamin Golder Nicole Rappin Norris Hung and I pitched Code for America on a project to help families access their tax benefits, such as the #eitc and #childtaxcredit. Tax benefits can be worth thousands, and can be life-changing for low-income families, but accessing them requires eligible families to navigate our country's bewildering maze of tax preparation services. We argued that the government has a moral obligation to make it easier for low-income households to file, and that they were failing to fulfill it. We believed that if we created free, trustworthy, clarifying, and accessible tax prep services like GetYourRefund.org and GetCTC.org, we could prove that we don't have to rely on the private companies who were charging an arm and a leg for filing simple taxes. We hoped that one day we could support the IRS in launching its own free, high-quality, tax filing software.
Today, the IRS announced that they are launching a pilot "direct file" service that would allow families to claim the tax benefits that belong to them -- for FREE. Blog post here with more info: https://lnkd.in/gerpRH3S
The tax lobby is gonna fight back, hard. I believe in the end we will have free and simple tax filing, so no one misses out on tax benefits they deserve because they can't afford to file.
Many many people and organizations came together to make this happen - VITA sites, advocates, government agencies, think tanks - but I am so damn proud of our tax team for the small role that we played in this collective effort. Huge shoutout and congrats to the entire team, but especially Kelly M. for her amazing product vision, Anu Murthy for stellar design, and Gabriel Zucker for advocating for this vision at the highest levels. Thank you also to CfA leadership for saying yes to that unexpected pitch 4 years ago, and for supporting us through the wins and losses over the past few years. I've recently turned my attention to other exciting work at CfA, but this amazing team is ready to watch like hawks to make sure this win sticks.
