I'm so excited to share that I'll be running my 3rd marathon in April! I was originally supposed to run the London Marathon in October of 2022, but some health concerns last summer forced me to defer to this spring.   While at the time, deferring didn't feel fun, it was most definitely the right decision. I may not talk about it often, but I've lived with an autoimmune disease since I was a teenager & not a day goes by where it doesn't impact my life. In that vein, I feel incredibly lucky to be able to run with Make-a-Wish, an organization that grants wishes to sick children, quite like myself when I was younger.   I never sought out a wish, but I know the kind of impact receiving one can have. Being sick as a child is a lonely, scary, & challenging experience that has shaped so much of who I am & informs nearly all of my adult actions & decisions. While I can't go back & be a friend to younger (sicker) Annie, I can be who I needed to others going through similar experiences.   My goal is to raise 2500₤ (~$3000 USD) for Make-a-Wish & I would greatly appreciate it if you considered supporting me!

On Monday, I muted my slack notifications for the first time, completely deleted my email off of my phone & lined up to run the Boston Marathon for the Alzheimer's Association in honor of my nana, with my younger brother, James, by my side.

James and I didn't have traditional training cycles & for both of us, this marathon was both a marathon in distance and a marathon of strength. While my brother ran his first marathon as a Type 1 Diabetic, I ran mine in the midst of a flare & being severely anemic, the day sandwiched between 4 iron infusions the past two weeks. When I got the notification on my watch that James finished, I cried, because his win was mine. & running while diabetic is truly no walk in the park.

I went into this marathon knowing it wasn't going to be a PR for me as my health had forced me to stop training for it back in February. But in another sense, it was a personal best. The last 8 miles were impossible, but for every friend & stranger & college kid I saw, all I had was a smile, a high five, & a hug. It was a personal best marathon because of the joy I felt all 26.5 miles my watch says I ran. I wasn't fast, but my 3 goals were simple:

  1. cross the finish line
  2. not need immediate medical attention
  3. have FUN

& although I was asked multiple times at the end if I needed medical attention, I can easily say I accomplished all 3.

This might be a weird LinkedIn post for some, but Monday was an accomplishment that I had been working on for months that didn't go my way. Monday was another day of seeking joy & celebrating.

Major thanks to my friends, family, & coworkers for checking in over the past few months, for tracking & cheering for me day of, & for even letting me join a slack call mid run one time (if you know you know). Until the next one! (& yes, this is a picture of me crying. Fully owning it now)
