Internship seekers - a piece of advice as we head into recruitment season :-) It’s definitely a best practice to reach out to employees at a company to learn about an organization and build your network, but make sure you are doing so purposefully:

  • don’t just email recruiters! They are most likely getting inundated with emails and don’t have the time to respond to everyone (as much as we’d like to.) If you have questions about a recruiting process, look to join an info session or check out the careers page as most of that information is probably already there
  • reach out to people who you think can give you useful information…maybe they have a role you are interested in or are an alumni of your school and followed a career path that you’d like to learn more about. Don’t just reach out to someone simply because they work at the organization you are interested in.
  • make your outreach specific and easy to respond to. A generic question with no clear ask will get deleted. And don’t send the same email to everyone at one company - we will all figure out that you copy/pasted!

Finally, when you do get on that call, remember that YOU need to drive it. Come prepared with a list of (specific!) questions and take charge of the conversation!

Good luck to everyone recruiting this season…and if you made it this far and have more questions about networking, drop them in the comments and I’ll respond :-)
