Following a hugely stimulating and engaging week at the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) in Person conference in Tokyo, followed by a side-event on Gender Lens Investing with 2X Global (co-sponsored by Investing in Women and Sasakawa Peace Foundation / 公益財団法人 笹川平和財団), I’m reflecting on what I heard and the key questions now buzzing around my head. Aside from anything else, sitting in a room with over 1,300 investment industry stakeholders focussed on the urgency of incorporating sustainability within investing processes was pretty incredible.
#justtransition: The over-riding theme of the conference was climate change. What we know, of course, is that climate change isn’t gender-blind. Presenters emphasised the mantra “leave no-one behind” as economies shift from brown to green energy and that we cannot assume change will inevitably be equitable - inclusion must be a deliberate strategy as part of this work. How we will make sure just transition incorporates more equitable investments?
#stewardship: Many investors are incorporating gender considerations within their own organisations, be it as asset owners or asset managers. More can be done to influence investees through their stewardship role – how can investors work with companies to consider gender equality at board, executive, employment and impact levels?
Policy and regulations: The regulatory landscape for sustainability is complex and in need of more global harmonisation. It has, however, supported mainstreaming of sustainability. With the recent release of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) S1 and S2, we will be hugely interested to see the forthcoming ISSB standards, particularly for human capital, to see how gender equality is infused.
The role of data: Data plays a central role in investor decision-making and measuring alignment with, and progress against, impact metrics, particularly the SDGs. To what extent does data analysis consider gender equality across the investment process, and is this quantitative assessment enough to demonstrate and support investors to build inclusive and equitable economic empowerment? What’s beyond the numbers and what isn’t being captured?
