How Lucrative is Data Extortion Compared to Just Paying a Ransom?
Ben Carr , Ryan Golden, and Anthony M. Freed tackle this question in our Last Month in Security Podcast where they discuss findings from the Verizon 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report (#DBIR).
This year’s report found that roughly one-third of all #breaches involved #ransomware or some other #extortion technique.
The typical ransomware demand can range from a low of thousands of dollars to over $25 million, providing an instantaneous payout.
But data #exfiltration is a gift that keeps on giving since, once the data is exfiltrated by a hacker, there is no assurance the data will be deleted or not used for nefarious purposes.
In fact, as Ben Carr discusses, exfiltrated data can include customer, partner, and vendor information. And what’s to stop a #RaaS group from then targeting those organizations?
Or, on the flip side, using the information they have gleaned from the data to extort the initial compromised organization a second, third, or fourth time?
This makes data extortion a potentially more strategic and lucrative play than a one-time ransom payment.
