Highlights
It takes a concerted effort, in today’s algorithmical world, to choose a path that’s not being noted and scanned, funnelled and guided.
Algorithms have a habit of showing you similar things. Blanding aspects of life, through a data driven lens.
Like Nagasawa tells Watanabe, early in Murakami’s Norwegian Wood; “If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”.
But the benefits of consciously doing something different are well documented. A different route to work, a different place to visit, a different book to read.
It exercises the brain, flexes your mental agility, energising the neurons, and can improve your mood.
Seeing something new can be like bringing back the awe.
Last Saturday I sent out the 100th edition of the Circular; my weekly share of creativity, for creative and curious souls alike,
“Thank you for 100 Saturdays of artful traipsing. I would def miss this if it was gone.” JoAnn Fraser Lauterbach
For those who appreciate a growth mindset, unencumbered by algorithms.

Even if you are one of these incredible athletes, the opportunity to win Olympic Gold only comes around once in a while. Every four years. And it takes a lot of people working together, to bring these moments together. The athletes, their trainers, the organisers, the infrastructure, designers and artists, volunteers, the history of people that came before, and a whole load of other people who contribute.
(The picture is of my favourite Olympic poster by French artist Pierre Soulages)
Almost 25 years ago I saw the potential of a disparate group of comfort shoes lounging on the shelves of M&S.
I worked for one of their suppliers and knew that if I brought them together, gave them a collective spirit, they could be so much more, as a team.
I conceived a concept, and under the working title of MOLE (Movement Of Living Energy), designed an identity, and delivered a footwear collection that attracted all the other comfort shoes to come together and be friends. MOLE became Airtech, became Airflex™. Airflex™ continues to this day, long after I left the building.
A few years later, an entrepreneur came to me with a lump of moulded clay, and an idea. I took on the challenge developed it in to a midsole, and a sandal. Fitflop™ ’s Microwobbleboard has sold rather well ever since.
In more recent years, a healthcare supplier came to me with a need for a new kind of shoe to boost their collection.
I designed and developed a concise group, that delivered what every healthcare worker needs. They're among their bestsellers.
In each case, it always takes a team.
From knowledgeable technologists, to clever merchandisers, from courageous directors, inspirational entrepreneurs, marketing brains, and a factory that 'can do', every project needs people to believe in an idea.
To believe that things can improve. And connect with the ones who believe it too.
