🍓 STRAWBERRY LAW
Where were you when the first AI that is capable of complex reasoning dropped?
🛩 I was on a plane, without internet connection. Unfair!
🍓 Strawberry isn’t just another chatbot. It is the first GenAI that can reason.
It considers multiple approaches before generating final response. It thinks before it answers. And the longer it thinks, the better the results.
In fact, OpenAI researchers aim for it to one day think for hours, even weeks, to tackle the most complex challenges. Damn!
🍓 How good is it?
Strawberry o1 ranks in the 89th percentile on competitive programming questions, places among the top 500 students in the US in a qualifier for the USA Math Olympiad and exceeds human PhD-level accuracy on a benchmark of physics, biology, and chemistry problems. The results seem very promising.
🍓 But what does Strawberry mean for law?
It’s a game-changer. One of the main critiques of GenAI in legal work is that its responses often feel shallow, lacking the depth and reliability needed for serious legal matters.
Strawberry could change that. With the ability to break down complex information, recognize and correct errors, and explore different approaches, it might help us far more effectively than the old chatbots.
Yet, there’s a catch.
It doesn’t matter how hard you think if you’re thinking about the wrong things. Most of these models are trained in legalese, and by default, they’ll keep producing legalese.
😱 Here’s a little-known truth: the bar isn’t always set that high in law. Just look at the Terms of Service from big companies and ask yourself, "Is this really the best we can do?"
The real next step isn’t just making machines smarter; it’s about using them to create legal solutions that truly serve people.
🍓 The future of law isn’t about teaching AI to think like "lawyers". We can aim higher.
We need to design AI systems that support human-centered approaches and learn to use these tools to create humane, usable, and effective legal systems and services.
Strawberry won’t do that for us—that’s our job as lawyers.
😅 The comment section on Sam Altman’s X is WILD:
"Babe, wake up, new man made God just dropped!"
"Can it explain how a nonprofit organization transformed into a for-profit company".

SAME 💩 BUT NOW 100x FASTER
We've seen many AI tools in law that are built on old ideas.
This results in contracts that no one understands, illegible terms of service everyone skips, horrible redlines and privacy notices that don’t improve privacy—but now 100x faster! 😵💫
As a profession, we’re missing the point. The debate often centers on whether lawyers will be replaced or augmented.
Instead, we should ask ourselves: What value do we produce?
I believe in "better before cheaper" and "revenue before cost." Competing on efficiency and price alone is a losing battle.
AI might not replace us, but we risk making ourselves insignificant by just doing mediocre work faster.
We should focus on quality.
But what does a good contract look and feel like? What makes a truly great contract? How can we speed up negotiations? How can we use legal documents as a way to sell, market and build relationships?
Legal Design addresses these questions. It's not a silver bullet, but it really focuses on the quality problem.
At a very basic level, Legal Design is about believing we can do better. We can create more accessible, helpful, and engaging legal documents and products.
The key to achieving this is empathy, design research, collaboration, and a deep understanding of legal problems. AI plays a significant role in this process and complements Legal Design perfectly.
Let’s set the bar high and start creating beautiful legal work that our clients will love.
Let’s focus on quality over AI-assisted mediocrity. ❤️
This photo is an outtake from our photo sessions. It's the face I make when I see a legal AI solution that prioritizes quantity over quality.
Want to learn more? We have great courses on Legal Design on our Legal Design School platform.
And anyone who doubts the ideas in this post will get a free license to our new course, "Legal Design 101," launching next week. 😂 That’s a promise.
