Retreat? Never is the prompt reaction naturally. History is also full of #quotes about war strategies and fighting to the death rather than retreating.

But have you ever retreated? Not the comfortable ones in Bali but ones where you had to make some uncomfortable choices to step back and reassess stuff.

There is a premium attached to 'pressing hard' and moving forward at any cost in our appearance obsessed world but sometimes, stepping back is the right way to move forward #methinks.

Founders specially suffer form the glorified stories of the #hustle culture :)

Although this equally applies to stuck up mid career corporate executives, value mismatched partnerships, narcissistic relationships and any combination of wrong choices in general.

In a world that celebrates constant action, we forget that retreating is not about giving up—it’s about gaining perspective.

👉However, know that 'Retreat' is a distant cousin of 'Pivot' and not a sibling. Pivot is often heard in the startup alleys but it's about reassessing the feedback from 'outside' whereas retreating can be the result of listening to your 'inner self'.

Take the bow and arrow analogy: to propel an arrow forward, you must first pull it back. The same applies in life. Retreating allows you to gather strength, recalibrate, and aim with precision.

#Nature too, shows us the wisdom of retreat. Trees shed their leaves in autumn, only to bloom again in spring, stronger and more vibrant.

So, when life does zig-zag-zug for some time and you feel overwhelmed, don't hesitate to retreat. It's a strategic pause, not a setback.

✌️A setback is always a setup for a comeback :)

Irrespective, there is merit in embracing the stillness, and let it guide your next steps forward.

During retreat periods, it’s crucial to adopt a structured framework to ensure your time is productive and transformative.

Here’s a simple 4-step experiential framework :

🧘‍♀️Reflection - Take time to reflect on where you are versus where you want to be. This can include reviewing recent successes, failures, and lessons learned. Be brutally honest or befriend a well wishing harsh critic. It helps to collect diverse data sets.

✅ Reevaluation - Assess your current goals, habits, and priorities. Sometimes, what worked in the past no longer serves you. Learning to let go that no longer serves your inner self can take a lifetime but worth the effort.

⚡Recharging - Use this retreat to nurture yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Self-care is crucial for rejuvenation. What brings you joy is a crucial question to contemplate.

📕Replanning - After you’ve reflected and recharged, it’s time to create a new action plan. Start small and focus on meaningful, deliberate actions. 'Kaizen' is the approach for rebuilding. Japanese adopted and did it after the war, so can you.👍

To pivot or not to pivot 🤔is one emotionally charged, startup life threatening and perplexing decision for startup founders.

📈As per a silicon valley based survey (source - Hubspot blog) including 150 founders that revealed 55% of them reported having to pivot their startups to avoid failure. Although less than half of the founders surveyed said they were optimistic at the start of the pivot process, however 75% reported success.

A startup pivot helps company to shift its business strategy to accommodate changes in competitive landscape, customer preferences, or any other factor that impacts its bottom line. If you care for the feedback, it can translate itself into a successful outcome.

🏦Many such examples are there including famous household names like 'Instagram' which started as 'Burn', 'Tote' became 'Pininterest' and 'Slack' had a funny name as an online game called 'Glitch' to name a few.

👉One such successful but lesser known story is about one of my fav founders Mukesh Singh, CEO and Co-founder of Zopsmart, which started as Zopnow in 2011. Started as one of the first online grocery platforms in India, the team was known for its know-how of the grocery supply chain and superb tech they built.

Despite being funded, they reached a point of soul searching where it became a deep pockets game with super well funded new competition. With burn rates going up, it was time to pivot or throw in the towel.

Mukesh and team geared up to gain fresh insights and found their tech build could solve the problems of making brick and mortar retailers go online with an end to end proposition.

🎉Cut two, not only they bought their investors back, they are a 500+ strong team and a high double digit million $$$ topline with strong presence in USA where tech stacks of clients like Kroger gets powered by Zopsmart capabilities.

I asked Mukesh for his insight into the process looking back on those dreadful days.

🌈He replied with all his trademark similicity - "While they say that Pivot is change in strategy without a change in vision, the point that often gets missed is the importance of team. Pivot is a painfully rewarding process -  keeping the core team intact is key. Most important after a successful pivot dont forget to appropriately reward them. A successful  pivot is often followed by newer and cleaner cap table and a fresh set of supporters. It's a rebirth after all."

Working and supporting the resilient work and value created by such such founders is a privilege thanks to Startup-O Edge program dedicated to help with cross border revenue growth.

Best wishes to all founders going through soul searching in this current climate. 👍
