Highlights
Let's talk Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)! Specifically California's network of 124 MPAs. They were implemented 10 years ago and are currently under review. Thanks to a great investment from the state in monitoring and research, we've learned a lot! This is important for California AND for our body of knowledge about marine ecosystems in general.
What did we learn? MPAs work! Remember, they are not a fishery management tool; they exist to protect biodiversity and enhance ecosystem health for all of us on this planet.
What did we miss? Equity... The state has improvements to make in who is regarded and given space in decision-making. Tribal communities are beginning to get the acknowledgement and sovereignty they deserve, but others who are marginalized will continue to be so without effort and attention from state agencies.
