Highlights
EU's CBAM presents several challenges for the industry. While larger questions remain on its legality in the context of multilateral agreements such as UNFCCC and the WTO, small steps to mitigate its immediate impact is necessary as well. In this op-ed piece, Prachi Priya and I reflect on some of the options: (a) arriving at the carbon price implicit in India's regulatory framework; (b) need for data confidentiality for commercially sensitive data provided by businesses towards CBAM reporting; (c) assess whether there can be any alignment of India's emerging carbon credit trading scheme with CBAM; and finally (d) make this a key issue for India's FTA negotiations with EU & UK. #trade #CBAM #climatechange #sustainability #carbonprice #UNFCCC #climatejustice
"Reflecting on India’s Evolving Trade Policy": It was a pleasure to moderate a stimulating session with three stalwarts Peter Van den Bossche, Pierre SAUVĖ and Pritam Banerjee at the Swiss Embassy, New Delhi. Held along the sidelines of the wonderful summer academy organized by World Trade Institute (WTI) and Centre for WTO Studies , the event was attended by enthusiastic students, academics and practitioners of trade law. My heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Ralf Heckner for hosting the event, Indraneel Ghose for bringing this together, the panelists and the wonderful audience. #trade #multilateralism #bilateralism #TEPA #FTAs #WTOplus
