When I started building hpy, I kept hearing all these notions of what entrepreneurship “should” look like.
Endless hours, late nights, missing family dinners and loads of stress.
The reality is building a company is hard. There are always a million things to do and never enough time. Exhaustion, burnout and even depression can creep in pretty quickly. It’s a uncertain journey and I’ve experienced them all.
I found one of the tricks to making it all happen to is living in alignment with your values. For me it took quite a bit of iteration and going through the value sort at least a dozen times.
Finding a way to remind yourself of what your values are on a daily basis and make decisions from them really helps. I list mine on the lock screen of my phone as a constant reminder. Family and happiness (which I define as balance) sit at the top of the list.
Meetings can wait, features can wait, onboarding new folks can wait. Today, I’m volunteering to take my daughter and her class to the San Diego Botanic Garden. There absolutely no where I rather be. I don’t need to be present because I am doing what is most important to me.
She’s only going to be 5 once in her life and to me that matters far more than anything else.
