Highlights
Do you want to be a 10X developer? Here are some tips from my experience.
-
Think, visualize and program your edge cases in the first attempt The common tendency is to first implement the “happy” path and then think about all permutations later. This is a reasonable approach. However, to be 10X you have to visualize the permutations upfront and code as many paths in your first attempt. You might miss some and that is ok. The rationale is that considering the scenarios will help you design right the first time. Also, going back to the code to add new scenarios later consumes time. 10X is all about saving time. Getting it right the first time is important.
-
Be a partner with your product owner and understand intent Understanding the intent is all about applying “common sense” to understand what the product owner is really trying to build. Once you understand the intent, you will be able to suggest reasonable simplifications and workflows that is acceptable to all parties. Understanding the requirements and intent is key to delivering the right software in the first iteration in a reasonable amount of time.
-
Use unit tests heavily to vet your code as you code I see so many developers not using unit tests at all. Unit test is your best friend. Use it to test your code rapidly without dependencies on external systems. It will help you validate all your boundary cases and pre-emptively identify bugs. Fix your bugs not by running the system end to end, which is slow and time consuming, but by writing a quick unit test to reproduce the issue.
-
Learn to read and understand code and log files There is so much information available in the log files and source code. I have seen several developers just overlooking the information in front of their eyes and resorting to time consuming debugging to identify the issue or to understand the code. Learn to read the code and not miss the detail in the log files. Use the power of your IDE to read through and understand code. This single tip will help you save a lot of time.
-
Ask your manager to avoid unnecessary status update meetings Be upfront with your manager if you feel that they are wasting your time with unnecessary status meetings. Writing good code requires focus and having that attention span broken by multiple meetings will hamper productivity.
-
Don’t be carried away by the buzz There are several marketing gimmicks that have a hype cycle, claiming to be a solution for all your problems. For example, Agile as a practice is an enabler but not a solution to higher productivity. I see several managers thinking that if they adopt Agile it will solve their woes. Higher productivity is an outcome only of your ability to understand the requirements clearly and code right the first time. Everything else is just paraphernalia.
What else do you think will help to become a 10X developer? It would be great to hear your views.
