Last week, the surgeon general announced that parenting can be hazardous to one’s health. While it was one of the biggest headlines of the week, it did not come as a big shock to most parents, and not to us at Nanit, who have been working to improve the well-being of parents for the past 10 years. While these reports can feel alarming and discouraging, there’s one thing that feels more important to acknowledge: parental wellness is gaining attention on a national, governmental, and political level. This is good news. Parenting is finally starting to receive the focus it deserves, and is being studied, covered by the media, and debated on national stages. While we certainly have a long way to go, this means we are that much closer to the societal shifts and systemic support that should be table stakes for families to thrive.

Another aspect of the report resonated with me: 65% of parents say they are lonely, compared to 55% of those without kids. Connectivity and support are core to our mission, and at Nanit, parenting has always been a team sport. When I joined the company, I was thrilled to learn that 40% of our users are dads. Since our first product entered the market, we have been leveraging data, tech, and innovation to help drive the shift in parent involvement.

Why is this important? In a recent Nanit Lab study, of the 55% of mothers whose partners were not involved in infant care at night, they reported sleeping about 4.5 hours less per week compared to those whose partners were involved. The study also showed that more sleep for moms was associated with lower levels of depression. One of the best ways to empower moms is to empower dads, and we will continue to design solutions that respond to both parents’ needs. While the highs and lows of parenting are real, one of our goals is to level the parenting playing field and create happier, less stressful homes so parents can focus on the joy that parenting can bring.

I’m excited to share my recent interview on the 'Her Next Big Move' podcast with Lauren Cheek and Priscilla Presley. I discussed my career journey from fashion to leading Nanit, and shared my thoughts on effective leadership:

Passion and Problem-Solving: Being passionate about the challenges you’re tackling, no matter your role, is crucial. It fuels innovation and drives meaningful progress.

Trust and Communication: Building a strong leadership team depends on trust and open communication. It's vital to have team members who feel empowered to share their perspectives and challenge your ideas.

Diverse Perspectives: Embracing a diverse team and "filling in your own gaps" helps deliver better results, and fosters a collaborative environment where everyone contributes to the vision.
