Aonghus Shortt

Founder CEO at FoodMarble

Aonghus Shortt is the Founder and CEO of FoodMarble, a company known for developing innovative health technology solutions, specifically a portable digestive breath tracker. Established in 2014 in Dublin, FoodMarble aims to help individuals manage their digestive health by providing tools that measure the digestive process, thereby assisting those with chronic gastrointestinal conditions.13

Background and Motivation

Shortt's journey into the field of digestive health was personal; it began when his wife, Grace, faced significant digestive issues. After completing his PhD, he explored scientific literature on breath analysis and decided to create a prototype device to help her. This initial effort led to the development of FoodMarble's first product, which garnered substantial interest, including $1 million in pre-orders during its launch campaign.13

Achievements and Vision

Under Shortt's leadership, FoodMarble has made strides in the health tech sector, aiming to normalize the use of personal digestive devices as lifelong companions for gut health management. He envisions a future where these devices help users continuously adjust their diets based on real-time data to enhance their overall health.13

Personal Insights

In interviews, Shortt emphasizes the importance of validation in product development and motivates his team by encouraging them to think innovatively about business growth. He also values emotional intelligence in leadership, believing that maintaining control over one's emotional state can effectively guide a team through challenges.1

Shortt's educational background includes studies at University College Dublin, and he has previously worked at Electroroute before founding FoodMarble.24

We've just published evidence that SIBO is apparent from breath readings taken during the day, i.e. in a non-fasting state. In fact, we see that hydrogen is strongly elevated in these "post-prandial" breath readings and returns to normal following the usual antibiotic treatment. This statistically robust insight lends further support for the use of day-to-day breath monitoring as part of remote patient monitoring (RPM) programs. At FoodMarble we believe this is a key element of managing serious gastrointestinal conditions, in particular recurrent SIBO. This paper arose from a registered clinical trial completed at Johns Hopkins Medicine and included validation data. The paper is thankfully open access and can be found here:  https://lnkd.in/eg4KBQXv
