A must read piece by Deepa Iyer, with data on Indian Americans (desis) in the US that is rarely talked about -

Our community stateside is not a monolith.

📌 Indians comprised the third-largest undocumented population in the USA, many crossing the border via Mexico

📌 More than 1.2 million Indians, including dependents, are in line for green cards; 424,000 employment-based applicants are facing a 134 year wait

📌 Conservative rhetoric on immigration, abortion and a host of other policies will have a negative impact on the South Asian community, even those in coveted white collar jobs

If as an Indian American you've never before engaged in politics - it's time to rethink your position.

This may be an unpopular position - employers can't and shouldn't keep politics out of the workplace.

Underneath divisive beliefs is a shared sense of urgency. Most workers, regardless of their political beliefs are worried about -

Wage stagnation and the rising cost of living, and overall economic stability.

Shifts in healthcare benefits, and reduced access to affordable care for workers and their families.

Rapid advancements in technology, and investment in AI that are already leading to mass layoffs, and job displacement.

The best thing employers can do is create space for these conversations.
