Openly admitting a big job failure challenge accepted Sophia H.

I was fresh out of college, buzzing with excitement as I stepped into my first real job as a Community Training Specialist. Finally, I had a “real” job, a 9-to-5 that marked my entry into the professional world. I felt like I had made it. The first month was a breeze—I was absolutely killing it. But life, with its uncanny sense of humor, decided to throw me a curveball.

A significant part of my job was to implement treatment procedures and conduct daily and monthly state utilization reviews for the participants in our adult day centers. At the end of each day, my coworkers and I would log onto our computers and type up our notes. Every Friday, we had to write a summary of how our week went and the progress we had seen. Once a month, I would meet with families and various service coordinators to discuss individualized education plans, progress improvement, job readiness, and educational placements. These conferences typically included my supervisor, myself, service coordinators from the state, and family members of the individuals we were working with in our day hab center.

Fast forward to my first-ever monthly meeting. I was nervously searching for my notes, only to discover that an entire month’s worth of documentation was missing! 😱 In an egregious error, I had been diligently saving my daily and weekly notes every day for a whole month—or so I thought. In reality, I had forgotten to hit submit, resulting in none of my progress being saved.

I was horrified. My heart pounded as I envisioned my imminent termination. But then, I remembered something crucial: I was good at pivoting. I took a deep breath and explained my situation to a coworker who had trained me. He directed me to a binder that contained the previous month’s notes. Using these as a guide, I quickly scanned the contents and, with fingers flying across the keyboard, managed to type up a month’s worth of notes just 45 minutes before my meeting was set to begin. 🕒

That experience taught me some invaluable lessons:

1)Triple-check your work: Always ensure that your work is saved and submitted. This habit has become a cornerstone of my daily routine. ✅

2)Plan: Preparation is key. Planning days in advance helps me stay organized and ready for any unexpected challenges. 📅

3)Ask for help: It’s okay to lean on others when you’re in a tight spot. My coworker's guidance was invaluable, and it reminded me that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness. 🤝

4)Don’t try to do everything alone: Collaboration can be a lifesaver. Trusting and relying on your team can make a world of difference. 👥

Life will always throw you curveballs, but with a bit of preparation, a willingness to ask for help, and a lot of resilience, you can hit them out of the park. 🌟

As I fire up my laptop today and reflect on our #maoffsite2024 I can’t help but smile at all the amazing memories I was able to make. I have the honor to work with amazing people at Merit America and I wanted to share some of my favorite moments. Connecting with my team in person was truly special… seriously thank you Katie Rakusin, Chelsea Haskins ,Sophia H. for the non stop laughter last week. Jenell N. Prince, MBA, Alexis Fisher you were both truly missed but I am glad we were able to share some laughs via our team meeting on Zoom.

Connecting with my Somos Méritos affinity group and Merit parents was amazing. I’m so glad that Merit America has these amazing affinity groups ( employee resource groups) for us to connect beyond work. This is so impactful for our work culture. It was so much fun listening to our favorite songs, eating pizza, and dancing to some tunes.

And lastly it was nice to disconnect for a while and enjoy Mother Nature. So refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to tackle the rest of the week #CareDeeply
