Highlights
Eco-friendly food vending is finally having its moment in the sun. Samantha M.'s article showed real industry progress; Scream Truck in NJ replaced its diesel ice cream generator with batteries. That wasn't possible a few years ago.
The dirt that comes out of existing diesel ice cream generators is only cool if you feel nostalgic about a NYC before the Clean Air Act. I once stuck a handkerchief in front of a generator's kid height exhaust and it came back black with soot.
Getting rid of those generators would be like taking tens of thousands of cars off the road. Let's do it! Unfortunately the new proposed City Council legislation is aspirational, more an idea written on a napkin than a plan that can work.
Vendors need truck options and financing. The public needs to make sure the change happens quickly and safely, including with well-designed batteries. We should probably get to the bottom of how dirty these generators are, and what options are available for retrofit versus starting from scratch with a new electric truck or van like the Ford eTransit.
