⏱ Whichever way you turn it: we are running out of time for #excuses.

2030 days, 290 weeks, 169 months until 2030. No matter how you count, there is only time for action left. And increasingly the message across the industry is that future technologies, fuels and vessels are of course part of the solution, but right now we have to use the tools we have available.

Lately this point is becoming increasingly evident. It was made crystal clear in Arsenio Dominguez keynote during Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) this year, who explicitly encouraged us to "use digital tools to enhance efficiency" while we wait for the future fuels. And looking at the top of my LinkedIn feed just today, I see Øistein Jensen of Odfjell SE making a similar point while Peter Jonathan Jameson of Boston Consulting Group (BCG) laments the lack of real action of change at #Posidonia. And that is just the top of my feed.

So, given the short time, what should the industry do? Using existing technologies is not rocket science: formulate an ambition, put together the plan, have the patience and the leadership stamina to see it through. You need to increasingly plan for fleet scaling of technologies, not just do pilots (after all, time IS short). You need to build data driven organisations and processes. That likely requires competencies you do not have today. So develop your people and hire for the future.

Do you need an example to follow? Lasse Kristoffersen and Wallenius Wilhelmsen is a good example, ticking all the boxes, but there are a few other vessel owners and operators out there as well. Frederik Pind at Njord can give you some pointers to which technology to choose when embarking on such a journey, but there are surely others as well. And you can of course always reach out to us at Raa Labs to spar on how high-frequency data from vessels can be applied.

But most importantly, you need to start.

I really enjoyed todays discussion at The Digital Ship conference in Oslo. Great moderation done by Kristin Helen Andersen, as well the co-nerding done by Donal Duggan and Michael Østergaard. Lots of great points made, with general agreement that technology innovation is all about the change management and a little about the technology. Thus, if you treat your innovation merely as a budget item, you are likely to get little innovation back.
