Highlights
I’ve been ashamed of this for years.
I’m a sucker for flattery. I have been enamored with people who waxed on about how amazing and brilliant I am for most of my adult life. I’ve given openly, freely and abundantly of myself in those situations time and time again. Often I find there was no real substance or depth to the relationship. I simply let myself be used.
It’s embarrassing to acknowledge I’m so easily manipulated. It’s humiliating to recognize how shallow my ego is. And it’s disappointing I have kept making the same mistake over and over and over again.
A mistake I will probably continue making at points throughout my life.
But at least I can recognize the pattern. At least I have trained myself to spot these situations. At least I notice the way the cause and effect play together.
The fact is, we are human and we all have moments where our egos take over. Even if we think we are a selfless leader - our ego is still there running things. Egos aren’t about being selfish. They’re chief aim is to satisfy some primal need, a feeling of mattering that drives us.
Everyone’s Ego drive is unique and there are general categories people tend to fall into. My ego has craved validation and affirmation. Things missing from my emotionally and verbally abusive childhood.
Wholehearted leaders model radical candor. We make the invisible visible through vulnerability. Our transparency makes others feel less alone and paves the way for more radical candor, which enables healthy conflict.
What’s something you’ve been ashamed to share but have given voice to publicly?
Sharing stories like this is an act of generosity. Will you join me in giving voice to these parts of our human experience?

We spend so much time looking forward to what we want to change or improve it obscures how far we've come!
I recently checked in with a client I started coaching in 2018 - sharing the goals from our first engagement together, I asked how he felt about them now
Here were his goals for the initial coaching program:
- Draw better boundaries
- Improve time management & productivity to make the most of a 40 hour work week and STOP taking work home
- Enhance communication skills to be a better advocate in meetings, manage conflict well and find his voice
The verdict?
Not only has he made significant progress in all these areas, he's also seen a positive ripple effect.
Investing in yourself is a gift that keeps on giving. Reflecting on your journey is a key component of resilience.
Do you have a time capsule from the past you can uncover today that'll illustrate how far you've come?
You might just find the motivation you need to persevere today by looking in the rearview mirror of your career.
