Marketers and advertisers can breathe a sigh of relief - for now. Google just announced that they are pulling back on their decision to deprecate third-party cookies in Chrome. While this development may seem to offer stability, it is crucial for marketers to continue focusing on the collection and utilization of zero and first-party data.
Why? Because this whole period has shown us that relying solely on companies like Google and Apple to set the terms for how to safely target audiences and respect people’s privacy poses a substantial business risk. Google says it will soon introduce “a new experience in Chrome” that will let users make an informed choice. While user consent on third party cookies is excellent news for users (hey, I like my privacy as much as the next person!), it could also mean that third-party cookies are less useful and advertising struggles to be relevant or effective.
By investing in 0P and 1P data, marketers maintain direct relationships with customers, foster trust and loyalty, and provide a more personalized and engaging customer experience. Moreover, building robust zero and first-party data strategies helps future-proof marketing operations.
So, while Google’s decision offers a reprieve, it is essential to acknowledge that the digital ecosystem is always evolving. By continuing to prioritize 0P and 1P data, marketers can mitigate risks and ensure that they are well-prepared for any future changes.

I was privileged to spend my birthday yesterday as a Mentor at a Speed Mentoring® event at ACCES Employment, a community-based workforce development organization that assists job seekers from diverse backgrounds who face barriers to employment when integrating into the Canadian job market. This particular event, in honour of Pride month, was dedicated to asylum seekers and refugees from the LGBTQ2S+ community.
It was wonderful to meet so many talented individuals from around the world – bankers, analysts, marketers, project managers – who have left incredibly difficult situations in their home countries to start a new life here. However, I was saddened by how few interviews people were getting, despite sending out hundreds of resumes.
You might say, “Applying to job postings is like throwing a needle into a haystack! Especially in these times. Networking is key to the job search.”
But what if you are new to the country and don’t have a network?
My birthday wish is for people who see this post to pledge to be more open to networking outreach from a newcomer. Share your knowledge and your own connections. Even just 30 minutes per quarter (so 4 short meetings a year) will go a long way in helping people land on their feet – and you might discover amazing new talent.
Remember, many people who have had to flee other countries arrive here with a wealth of job experience. And by coming here, these newcomers have already demonstrated many of the attributes businesses look for in new hires:
Courage Resilience Perseverance Initiative Adaptability Intelligence (they speak multiple languages!)
Let's continue to show why Canada is known as one of the most open-minded and welcoming countries in the world, and ensure that everyone has a fair chance at building a successful career here.
