Peeling back the layers...

..to share a little bit about my story as a business owner of A-Frame Hospitality, and what I'm facing as I try to maintain a balance. These two photos show when I got to NYC a couple weeks ago, and now on Shelter Island for a seasonal project with Sunset Beach Hotel. The start of a new chapter.

Being a small business owner comes naturally. I drum to my own beat. Since I was a kid, I knew I was “different.” I didn’t want to take the same path as everyone else. I’m curious. I wanted to explore everything with my own eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hands & feet. I’m independent, and that spirit is crucial to my journey. However, being a small business owner is not always glamourous. It can be extremely challenging, lonely, uncomfortable, and may expose the parts of yourself that may be hidden.

In the last year A-Frame Hospitality I experienced incredible highs & lows. I took big risks. I launched 1st & 2nd cohorts of the Compassionate Leadership course, invested in training myself to understand my breath in order to teach others about theirs, opened a restaurant with Popoca Oakland, worked with my first private cellar client, managed & recruited teams for private events all while working PT with my friends Broc Cellars. The freedom to collaborate with many has been a true joy. All that said, it was my least profitable year. It has been unbelievably hard & stressful financially. Tax season was & still is no joke. Admittedly, I’ve asked family & friends for help to pay the bills.

Was it worth it for the level of financial stress? I say this with full confidence, YES! I am not one to give up. I believe it takes at least 5 years to see if a business can make it or if they have to pivot, rebrand or call it. I’m also a woman of faith so that leads me to KEEP GOING! Even when giving up is the biggest temptation, I know God’s got me.

I’m currently scaling back on offerings A-Frame Hospitality to go forward with a leadership opportunity with André Balazs Properties. I’m investing in knowledge, experience & taking care of myself financially. This allows me the time & space to learn, grow, create & connect to what’s next for my business.

Sometimes we have to take two steps back to see the bigger picture on the canvas. Looking forward to what this chapter brings. To be continued...
