LET'S GET BEHIND THIS BILL - As we wrap up another Financial Literacy Month, there's exciting news on legislation front! This week a new Bill, Promoting Financial Literacy in Secondary Schools Act. has been introduced with a vision to revolutionize financial literacy right from the high school level. (https://lnkd.in/eif4Mhf6) Why is this important? The Bill, introduced by Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-22) and Congressman Wiley Nickel (NC-13) aims to provide a national template that can be adopted by all secondary schools in America that are looking to offer financial literacy. It creates standards that will help avoid fragmentation, overlap and reduce duplication by improving coordination, providing greater accountability for performance and outcomes, and recommend the use of resources consistent with need and impact. Currently, The Financial Literacy and Education Commission (FLEC) within the U.S. Department of the Treasury creates best practices for teaching financial literacy, but only for institutions of higher education (colleges). As more students continue to seek alternatives to college, they are missing out on these foundational financial literacy programs. Crucially, high school students need to know more about money as they make college and career choices. This legislation will require FLEC to include high schools when creating their best practices for students about budgeting, financial securities, credit, evaluating financial products, and student loan borrowing. No more waiting until college to get a grip on personal finance! David Valadao Wiley Nickel Doria Lavagnino Christina Sandy Derrick Wesley Richard Ciarletta Peter Neeves, Ph.D. Kevin D.
