Received a copy of Higher Education Systems Redesigned today. Re-reading the foreword a few years after writing was a great chance to reminisce about all my state system colleagues and their work while at USG and Gates. Some highlights:

“Astronaut, soccer player, news anchor. These were some of my childhood aspirations. State university system bureaucrat certainly did not make the short list.”

“...when each one of us looked up, or more accurately, typically toward a dome a few blocks away, we would find our own supervisors—the legislators, the governor, and state actors. It is a lonely place to find yourself in between these very different cultures [politicians and universities].”

“We had a relatively new leader in Dr. Daniel Greenstein. He came from one of these strange superstructures…” And look at you now, Chancellor, back at it.

“As my deputy director Suzanne Elise Walsh likes to say, we like to ‘discover’ things in the foundation world…”

Overall message, the case studies in the book are from “…leaders [who] are part of a selfless band of silent innovators....I am grateful to my own band that taught me so much while in Georgia, Vice Chancellors Lynne Weisenbach and Linda Noble; Chief Academic Officer Houston Davis; and his predecessor, David Morgan.”

Thanks to Jason E. Lane and Jonathan Gagliardi for editing. And contributions from Dr. Audrey Hovannesian, CCTO, Ken O'Donnell, Myk Garn, Tristan Denley, Joann Boughman, MJ Bishop, and Steven Mintz among many others that contributed to the work and understanding of systemness. [Sorry that Interaction Effect pitch from the Systems group didn't make the stage.]

There’s so much potential with this new converged architecture of broadcast meets Internet. With Evoca Learn we are starting with new ways of informal learning for K12 (if you’re at a museum, cultural institution, or historical site, etc. and want to be a part, let me know.) On the #lifelonglearning side there’s plenty of supply but we need better ways to reach and connect with potential learners in their household and de-risk that first (best matched) step in #upskilling, going back for formal edu, and so on (if you’re an edu institution, provider, boot camp, employer etc. and want to be some of the first to see what we can do together with this new medium, let me know.)
